DEL ROSARIO, CARPIO , MORALES WANT ARBITRAL AWARD RAISED AT UNGA
Despite Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.’s earlier open refusal to bring the Philippine arbitral award to the United Nations General Assembly in mid-September, two retired Supreme Court justices, and a former foreign secretary on Saturday pressed the Duterte administration to have the ruling taken up at UNGA.
In a joint statement released on Saturday, former Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, and retired Associate Justices Antonio Carpio and Conchita Carpio Morales appealed to the Duterte administration to rally UN members for support to the international arbitral tribunal’s award favoring the Philippines against China’s excessive claims to nearly all of the South China Sea.
Del Rosario, Carpio, and Morales said: “We, Filipinos, must not waste this chance to be heard” before the community of nations.
Earlier, Secretary Locsin said he would avoid talking about the Philippines’ July 2016 arbitral victory against Beijing because doing so, “Will only subject the country’s legitimate win to a debate.”
