SOTTO SUPPORTS CREATION OF OVERSEAS FILIPINO DEPARTMENT

Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Wednesday said he favors the creation of the Department of Overseas Filipinos because it jives with the Senate’s priority of rightsizing the government bureaucracy.

The Senate bill seeking the creation of this new department is still pending at the committee level.

A hearing on this proposed department was cut short last December after Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon moved to defer it until the bill on rightsizing the bloated government bureaucracy is tackled first.

Recently, Sotto said the creation of the Department of Overseas Filipinos is among the priority measures in the Senate.

Its counterpart bill in the House of Representatives was already approved last March.
