President Donald Trump walked out of the scheduled press briefing after a secret service agent approached him at the podium and asked him to leave the room.

The briefing resumed a few minutes later, and Trump announced that the US secret service shot a person outside the White House.

Trump said the person had been shot outside the White House perimeter and taken to hospital but gave few other details.

On Twitter, the secret service confirmed there had been an “officer-involved shooting” at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, an intersection at the north-west corner of the White House grounds.

But the agency provided no other details about the incident.
